British loudspeaker manufacturer Monitor Audio started from a small factory near Cambridge in 1972, and by 1976 it had opened a purpose built facility in Rayleigh in Essex, where, after further expansion, it still resides today. Monitor Audio produced its first direct drive turntable in 1979 - the ET500 - and moved completely over to all metal drive units in 1975.
